Rickleighmusic Presents…….

Live At Rick's

WELCOME to my music website. I enlist your support in building a community of live music enthusiasts in Madison, WI.
Over the years Madison has spawned many great musicians and bands. We have a vibrant music market, terrific venues and year-round music festivals. I support these events and assume you do too. However Madison lacks a dedicated Listening venue for adults of all ages who seek an intimate environment simply to enjoy the music. Listening Rooms cater to live acoustic performances without the background "noise" of sports TV's, games, and loud bar chatter.
Please support this concept and join us at Live At Rick's.  Sign up for our mailing list and I will keep you informed of local shows performed in such listener-friendly venues. Some may be house concerts and some commercial venues, but ALL will provide high quality performances in a true listening environment.

Many of our shows will be held in the Nightclub at The Brink Lounge, 701 East Washington Avenue, Madison WI, 53703.  Phone: 608-661-8599.

"Tony Monaco may be the best organ player you have yet to hear of flying stealth while playing arguably some of the hottest B-3 around. Mentored by the legendary Jimmy Smith in what is considered the more classic style, Monaco does not swing, smolder or smoke. Tony Monaco burns is this most fitting!" - Critical Jazz Review 2012

Lipbone Redding

Live At Rick's

Storyteller, songwriter, guitarist and "voice-stramentalist," Lipbone Redding, has spent the last 20 years traveling the world collecting and recounting exotic tales through music and performance art. A one-man orchestra with no electronic efx, Lipbone's natural human sounds of throat singing, bass and beat-boxing, and his astonishingly realistic lip-tromboning (hence "Lipbone") are a must-experience evening. Lipbone has shared the stage with Marcia Ball, John Mayall, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Tab Benoit, Cyril Neville, Tommy Castro and many others.

Opening Act: Boo Bradley.

Boo Bradley is a good time two-man Hokum junk and jive orchestra who are as fun to watch as they are to listen to. In 2007, Boo Mullarky and Bradley Selz joined forces with the intention of bringing the rollicking sounds and antics of the early 20th century jug bands back to life. Boo Bradley recently finished work on their 3rd album together - Rub Rub Rub, which won Best Blues Album in the 2016 MAMA awards. http://www.boobradley.com/

JUST ADDED: Greg Thornburg, respected local guitarist and drummer, will be the opening act. Greg's affinity for rhythm, bass lines, and distinctive harmonies is well represented in his fingerstyle acoustic guitar playing. Rick Tvedt recently reviewed Greg's new CD & said: "The sound on Hook Echo is fantastic. The bass is deep and resonant and there is just enough sparkle to enhance Thornburg’s exquisite tone. Just check out his stupendous instrumental version of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir.” Thornburg imbues this hard rock standard with so much sensitivity and finesse. All the intricacies of Jimmy Page’s masterful guitar work are present."

Tommy Harkenrider with The Memphis Kings, Dave Potter, and Birddog Olufs

Live At Rick's

We are changing our usual music format this time, bringing in Southern California's "jump blues" greats, The Memphis Kings, and matching them up with Beloit blues pros, The Dave Potter Trio with blues harp man, Bird Dog of the Bird Dog Blues Band. I call this music "Jump Blues, Rock-a-Billy Jazz, with a Western Sting" (say it with me now 3 times - fast). Think Gene Vincent, early Elvis, Stray Cats, 40's Jump Jazz, Les Paul licks and Bob Wills Western Swing. These cats will knock your socks off & you might even want to dance in those bare feet. Just listening is permitted, but more than foot stomping will be allowed, too. Tommy Harkenrider has performed with many notables: Albert Lee, James Harman, Candye Kane, Phil Alvin, Junior Watson, Kid Ramos, Big Sandy, Paul Pigat, and on and on.

Dolly Varden

The Nightclub @ The Brink Lounge, 701 East Washington Ave., Madison, WI

Steve Dawson and Diane Christiansen, husband-and-wife singer-songwriters are members of Dolly Varden, a Chicago-based "dynamic duo" (think Everly Bros harmonies). The band's six albums and live performances have garnered praise from Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, Mojo, and No Depression. Erik Hage of Allmusic has described their sound as "….atmospheric tunes laced with rock, country, and soul influences…" The songs in 2013's "For A While" were all written by Steve and/or Diane; it's the first album for which Steve "followed my own songwriting advice." (Factoid: the name Dolly Varden references a variety of trout found in the Pacific Northwest). Opener is local favorite Greg Thornburg, tasteful acoustic guitarist as well as drummer for Bob Manor & The Getaway Drivers.
